Deepest Bison is the musical brainchild of Minneapolis musician Kyle Imes. His latest album “Low Impulse Imagined” is a brilliant collection of songs that come from the heart and radiate with beaming energy in every way.

After the intricate acoustic guitar intro known as “Old Ether” things break out with the up tempo breezy feel of “I Need A Calling” which brings to mind singer songwriters like Matt Pond, James Mercer and Stephen Brodsky.  It’s a tremendous track and you can tell Imes is putting everything he’s got into it.

The easy going “Morning Star” showcases Imes dynamic vocal range and his ability to make such a simple song sound HUGE. I also like the touch of noise he put in this piece towards the end.

My favorite track on the album is the indie rock laced “Truthslayer”.  There is some really amazingly aggressive guitar work flowing through this one that adds a nice bite to the mix but it never over shadows the gracefulness of Imes voice.

“Seed Grows Slow” is such a damn good song. It’s got that driving with the top down on a hot summer day type feel while “Ride On” is more subdued and ethereal with some delightful ambient aspects that really put the track over the top.

Things venture into more experimental territory on “Gods Voice” as it mixes dialogue with a pulsating synth and infectious electro beat. Its a fun piece that really adds another dynamic to the record.

Things come to a close with the vibrant sounds of “Safe And Sound” which is another really amazing song. It feels very orchestral and triumphant to me and I don’t think there would be any better way to bring this record to a close than with that song.

Overall this album is a remarkable achievement. It’s the kind of album that opens up doors to new listeners and can cement a songwriter as one of the very best of his time.  Tune in here.
