Norfolk, Virginia hard rock band Full Moon Holler recently released a captivating 6 song E.P. titled “Outliers”. Made up of guitarist/vocalist Ryan Dillon, Bassist Matt Hobson and drummer Adam Parcell the band will perform this coming Saturday July 13th at 37th & Zen in Norfolk.

The band talk about some of their favorite songs in this weeks edition of “Five For Friday”. You can check out the E.P.  here.

Adam – Dinosaur Jr “The Lung”

I grew up on the “Feel the Pain” video on MTV, golf carts always make me think of that song.  However, my obsession with Dinosaur Jr did not start until Lou Barlow of Sebadoh came back to the band and Dino re-released their first three albums, circa 2005?  The album You’re Living All Over me blew my mind in general, I had been a staunch classic rock guy with dabbles into Built to Spill, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Sebadoh and Pavement but this song in particular blew my mind.  Plan 9 in Carytown was my source of CD purchasing at the time. I picked up Dinosaur, “You’re Living All Over Me” and “Bug”. I was not expecting the sound that came out from the speakers of my Chevrolet Corsica after placing “You’re Living All Over Me” in the CD player.  This is a song I love to listen to over and over again, it is good for workouts too. It embodies everything I love about this band: face melting guitar solos; thumpy rhythmic bass grooves; clever lyrics; and great/interesting drumming.  This song still reminds me of my days spent riding around downtown Richmond, VA with nowhere to go.  As well as trying to parallel park when visiting the Plan 9 in Carytown.  It also makes me want to run to my drum kit to try and play along.  Always a treat when they play this one live, especially when they first reunited, loved the extended guitar solos.  Check this one out, get your face melted.

Adam – Sonic Youth “Schizophrenia”

I first heard Schizophrenia in my older brother’s Geo Metro.  It was in preparation for Sonic Youth opening for Pearl Jam on the Binaural tour in Virginia Beach. Interesting tidbit, both Matt and I were at that show, but we did not know each other then.  We both have different reviews of that show. Anyways, not sure how my brother and I ended up with the Sister album first, we were listening to it as homework.  So oddly, this song makes me think of Pearl Jam too. I love the drumming in this song and it has all of the elements I like about Steve Shelley’s drumming. It has all of the Sonic Youth elements I love too.  I would get to Daydream Nation later, and actually Candle was a runner-up for this slot (saw an amazing performance of this at the 9:30 Club once) but Schizophrenia squeaked it out for the memory.

Ryan – Metallica “Harvester Of Sorrow”

So my biggest inspiration has always been my uncle Dave. His band was talented but they were all troublemakers and never got anywhere. He is the most talented guitar player I have ever seen and completely self taught. He had his first guitar hanging on his wall, the fucking thing had blood on the fretboard because as a kid he would practice until his fingers bled. I could bring him any song and he’d have the whole rhythm part figured in like 30 seconds and then go I bet he’s gonna play this for the solo and just about nail it. So imagine your 8 years old and you wanna listen to music like your guitar hero uncle. So I ask my mom if she will buy me a metal cassette. My mom who meant well comes home with, get this, a fucking white snake album. I am so excited to show my uncle “hey uncle Dave! Mom finally let me get a metal tape!” My uncle grabs the tape and looks at it, looks at me, back at the tape and goes “what the fuck is this bullshit? You don’t want this, I’m going to bring you something next time.” My uncle comes back to my parents the next weekend goes “here you can keep this. Throw that fucking white snake tape away” and hands me Metallica  “…And Justice For All”.  Pick any song, it’s filled with greats. “One”, “Harvester of Sorrow”, “…And Justice for All”. That is the album that truly started my journey as a guitar player.

Matt – “Shudder To Think “9 Fingers On You”

This Shudder to Think song comes from what was the bands first Major label release. This record stayed in my cd player for over a year listening to the whole record in its entirety 1 to 3 times a day. It had a huge profound effect on me. It was like my generations Queen or something like that to me. To this day I can listen to this thing on repeat. I still keep up with Craig Wedren and it is criminal how small his Youtube following is considering his solo career is fantastic as well.

Matt – Built To Spill “Carry The Zero”

As for Doug Martsch and his ever revolving array of players his most solid Built to Spill line up was in my estimation his late 90’s crew who wrote what I consider the most classic rock of my time. His timeless guitar work should be what Led Zep is to my older friends. I feel that strongly about his contributions. Two stints on a major while remaining on the indie scene is no easy feat. In the mid 2010s I talked to him after a show in Richmond in which I made the observation that he seemed the most content in his career in this time in which he smiled and agreed. That was huge for me.
