New Haven, Connecticut based artist Quartzmother describes their sound as “Music by Birds, for Birds” which is a rather intriguing description to me.

Their latest offering is an  E.P. titled “Asphodels” which features three songs that harness a rich aesthetic and offer the listener a unique and inspiring experience.

The title track is full of lulling guitars that are cinematic, inviting and warm and set a foundation for the vocals which immediately make me think of some type of story book character or narrator of some strange experimental film and it sounds absolutely amazing.

The guitars get dirty and more avant-garde on the instrumental “Left Dazed”. There are some light drums added to the mix and like the title track it’s all really cinematic and though provoking to me. Meanwhile closing number “Rewind” features the return of vocals which capture a more ambient and distant flair this go round. The music is also a bit more ominous and bold and it rounds out the record with a feeling of distinction that the artist really put their soul into the making of these songs.

I think “Asphodels” is a remarkable achievement for Quartzmother and I highly recommend it along with their other two E.P.’s  “Kraken” and “Bird You’ll Fly”. Looking forward to hearing the next group of songs.
