After a steady output of singles and E.P.’s Bloomington, Indiana’s Slug Rug return with a brand new self-titled three song E.P. and it’s absolutely brilliant.
Leadoff track “Lighter Fluid” has an undeniable elegance as layers of fuzzed out guitars carry the song alongside Audrey Priest’s beautiful vocal delivery. The tracks rich and intricate execution create a sonic landscape that’s atmospheric, dreamy and warm , which sets the mood for what’s to come.
“Oh Man!” starts off as a subtle acoustic track that’s once again driven by Priest’s stellar vocal cadence. Eventually everything breaks out into a cosmic blast of shoegaze bliss as thunderous chords and ethereal nuances create an other worldly feel to it all before winding back into a more stripped down acoustic stance. It’s a tremendous track that showcases the groups array of colorful sounds.
Meanwhile closing number “Teenage Symphony” is a stunning piece full of melodic hooks and clever dynamics . There’s a breezy, uplifting vibe to it all that I really enjoy and it also features some beautiful sounds provided by Reeder Vyain on piano and Ali Bailey on banjo.
Overall this is another impressive release from a band made up of incredible musicians who mash together perfectly. Excited to hear what they do next.
