After being out of the music scene since 2009, AJ Ross, the former bassist in bands such as: Nevermind the Story, Fake the Smile, Down Goes Hollywood and The White House is back making music as Suffice.
His latest E.P. “2025” begins with the uplifting “what’s up with the hangdog”, which features a pulsating drum machine, gliding bassline and a variety of other sonic textures that all circulate around Ross’s urgent vocal stance to create an infectious post punk feel that I really enjoy.
“wandervoid” is a more melodic track as a vibrant synth floats over top of the intense almost chanted vocals while “mid” moves into a heavier territory with crunchier guitars and an overall darker stance leading the way.
Things wind down with the melancholy mood of “lemon lime”. It’s stoic guitars and piano play well together and set a greyish tone that eventually builds up into an emotional peak full of massive power chords before coming back down. It’s a great way to end the record as it gives a sense that Ross has left everything on the table in cathartic fashion.
Overall “2025” is a tremendous E.P. that takes you on a beautiful rollercoaster ride of sounds and emotions and I absolutely love it.
