Quiet Lux is an indie rock band based in Georgia led by guitarist, vocalist, songwriter Michael Andrews. The band recent released their debut self titled E.P. and it’s absolutely brilliant.

I caught up with Michael to talk about his early musical influences, how he started writing songs and the making of the E.P. which you can enjoy here.

CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you as a kid and what artist or band did you enjoy the most?

Michael-When I was 10 years old, I stayed up one school night to watch ‘Late Night with Conan O’Brien’ and caught The Strokes’ debut American performance. I was utterly mesmerized. It truly was love at first sight/listen. ‘Is This It?’ was on repeat in my room from then on. Just sitting on my floor, playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 (sound effects only), and my Strokes CD blaring from my boombox on the shelf next to my head.

CMM-When did you first start playing music and creating your own songs?

Michael-When I was 7 or 8, my nextdoor neighbor friend and I spent a summer making an album with a PlaySkool cassette recorder, plastic toy guitars, kid drum set, and random FM snippets to transition each song. I really started taking things seriously in high school. Playing shows, recording, writing, the works.

CMM-The band recently released a really impressive 4 song E.P. What was the writing and recording process like? Any particular gear and instruments you used during the recording sessions that helped inspire you?

Michael-The writing process seems sporadic at the moment, but it is actually very intentional. I’ll create demos and let them sit. Then later, with more objectivity, I’ll focus on what I enjoy or find interesting and continue to write from there. One of the processes I enjoyed the most with The Quiet Lux EP, was controlling my vocal effects in real time in recordings. I know that’s a risk, but I’m satisfied with taking it.

CMM-If the band could do a score for any film director who would it be and what would the film be about?

Michael-Maybe Satoshi Kon.I just admire the surrealism and psychological themes. It’d have to be a thriller about demons that possess people’s minds. Putting them under a delusional psychosis that the world became a global demolition derby when it truly hadn’t. Spoiler alert: The good guys lose.

CMM-What do you have coming up next? Any new recordings or shows?

Michael-There is more in the chamber. More music, videos, performances. Follow us on IG, @quiet_lux_ for announcements.
