Based in Hanover, Germany instrumental post rock unit WOGEN impress on their new four song E.P. simply titled “Below”.

Leading off with the deeply atmospheric tones of “Slowdown” the group create a sonic whirlwind led by thunderous drumming, lush guitar chords, a gliding bass line and an array of eerie experimental tones that are as haunting as they are beautiful.

What seems like underwater sounds flow at the beginning of “Upsweep” as lush guitars blend together with a sea of colorful synths to create a cosmic and otherworldly platform while “Julia” showcases a more ambient approach before diving into more aggressive territory.

The water sounds return during the opening of “Train” and are soon joined by an infectious synth melody that I really enjoy. The guitars play intricately alongside the pin point drum work and hypnotic bass guitar as it builds to a roaring riff before settling back down into a wash of introspective electronics.

This is a tremendous record with top notch musicianship and the creativity to bring outside sounds to the mix and establish a breathtakingly beautiful audio landscape.
