Los Angeles based shoegaze duo Whither deliver big time on this seven song E.P. simply titled “Wilted”.
Everything starts out with the highly experimental “A Reflection Of…” which is rather “sound collage” like and serves as a great intro.
Things quickly break into to the explosive sounds of “I’d Stay Forever (redux)”. It’s melodic guitars and dreamy vocals are backed by a pounding beat that creates a sea of blissful rock n roll that’s atmospheric, colorful and down right inspiring. This song is laced with epic hooks that really showcase the bands ability to write a great song and it sets the pace for what’s to come.
“Grey Iris (redux)” is a slower paced piece that’s also full of monstrous riffs and has a breathtakingly beautiful quality to it all.
Meanwhile things shift back to the more experimental side with “What’s Pantaphobia?” which works as a nice interlude before things dive into the absolutely crushing force of “Leave Me Nothing (redux)”.
“We’re Too Human” is another relentless banger that’s full of flourishing synths, fuzzed out guitars and crushing drums which mesh perfectly with the songs elegant and captivating vocal delivery while the emotional “This’ll Get Better” sends the record off in fine form and leaves me wanting more.
I really can’t say enough great things about this release. It’s powerful, compelling and an incredible listening experience from beginning to end.
