Skin are a NYC based duo made up of members Yin and Christian.  The group recently released the E.P. ‘s “II” and “III” which blend experimental sounds with rich hypnotic undertones.

I caught up with Yin to talk about their early musical experiences, how Skin got together and the making of E.P. “II”.

CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you as a kid and what artist or band did you enjoy the most?

Yin-As a kid I would say late 90s early 2000s bands… I would steal my dads iPod. It was music like Linkin Park and Nine Inch Nails that impacted me the most.

CMM-How did you start crafting your own recordings and developing your sound?

Yin-I began playing guitar … I was combining random sound effects and just being experimental. As time goes on, I’ve been taking heavy inspiration from traditional sounds, especially ones involved with ritual practices.

CMM-You recently released a new record called “Skin II”. What was the writing and recording process like for these tracks and were there any particular pieces of gear you used to get the sound you were looking for?

Yin-For Skin ll, for 2 of the tracks we recorded with the MPC. We wanted to capture the sound by recording the tracks live all the way through so we can get a raw feel. For the song ‘Zulu’ , we played with sounds like the Clav and Piano.

CMM-If you could do a score for any film director, who would it be and what would the film be about?

Yin-Gaspar Noe. The film would be about the apocalypse.

CMM-Anything coming up?

Yin-Skin lll has recently just dropped. It was built to sound primitive, and ancestral. It’s definitely our most experimental project yet.
