Floating is a Philadelphia-based shoegaze-y indie rock band, writing personal music conjured from melancholic daydreams in waking life.

The band shares some of their favorite songs in this weeks edition of “Five For Friday” but first check out their track “Wendy” from their new record “La Di Da”

Mary Stii (vocals, guitar): Disorder – Joy Division

It feels nearly impossible for me to pick just one song for this, but I landed on “Disorder” by Joy Division. I’ll never forget the first time I heard this song – & every time I hear it again, it time-warps me back to feelings of youth, love, yearning & existential angst to a degree that makes me almost nauseous.

Joy Division & New Order awakened me to the realization that sometimes a simple guitar riff can say universes more than words.

Charles Pykus (lead guitar): Glenn Tipton – Sun Kil Moon

A perfect opening track for a personally beloved album that weaves between mellow acoustic melodies and crank-it-to-11 rock. This album served as a sort of renaissance to my musical direction and this song is what originally led me there.

Reana Konstantis (Bass): Sovay- Andrew Bird

The album ‘The Mysterious Production of Eggs’ was often played during car rides when I was a kid. Sovay was always my favorite with all of its simple layers stacked on top of each other to create something beautiful.

Hearing it now still unlocks memories I didn’t even know I had. It really shows how much power a song can hold. It was the beginning of my love for music.

Jesse Wilburn (drums): Atomic Punk – Van Halen

One day when I was in the car with my dad listening to the radio, and they played this crazy song… I’d never heard any sound like it before.

It was simple, carnal and fierce and when it ended the radio DJ came on and said everything that I was feeling. and then he played it again which sent me!

I was excited and emotional, and that song right there is a major reason for my love of expressive and otherworldly music. “

Johnny Danese (keys/synth): Supper’s Ready – Genesis

I picked this song for a couple reasons. The first being that it is a musical journey. With biblical references, psychedelic descriptions, and comedic quirkiness it tells a story about love, insanity, and the battle between good and evil. It explores several sections of beautifully composed arrangements and then ties it all up musically at the end. It is just so cool and nerdy – i love it.

The second reason I picked it is because it reminds me of driving to the beach with my family as a little kid. My parents would always play a lot of good music in long car rides, and this song always stuck out to me. I have been listening to it regularly my entire life.
