Pines of Rome first emerged in 1999, released another LP in 2003 and then disappeared for 20 years. They re-emerged in 2023 with The Unstruck Bell, and now have announced a new release, When You Are As Full As The Moon, out on the LA label Solid Brass on 6/19.
The album title comes from a Zen Buddhist poem by Theri Punna: “Fill yourself with the dharma. / When you are as full as the moon– burst open. / Make the dark night shine.” Bit of a lofty goal, maybe, but in this era of shadows, finding some way to shimmer in the darkness might be the only rational response. This album was recorded and mixed by Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, RI. It starts with the death of a parent and ends with the recognition that past mistakes might actually have saved us from a far worse fate.
The Pines Of Rome is a slowcore band from Providence, Rhode Island, who’ve been exploring the frontiers of Cosmic American Music on and off for the past 27 years, dialing down the tempo and turning up the volume to create tidal walls of sound that surge and break like the turbulent Atlantic waves that batter the shores of the smallest state in the Union.
Over the years The Pines Of Rome has shared the stage with bands like Songs:Ohia / Magnolia Electric Co., Richard Buckner, Bonnie Prince Billy, June of ’44, Shipping News, Lullaby for the Working Class, The Promise Ring, Jets To Brazil, Rainer Maria, Joan of Arc, Silkworm, Bright Eyes, and more.
In May of 2023, after a 20 year hiatus, the band returned with The Unstruck Bell; their 2nd full length album and first with Solid Brass Records. Written largely during the pandemic it was the result of a year of unbridled creativity for the band during an era of unprecedented crisis.
In 2025 the band returned to Machines With Magnets to work with long-time friend and producer Seth Manchester (Model/Actriz, Lightning Bolt, BIG|BRAVE, The Body, Mdou Moctar). When You Are As Full As The Moon is the band’s latest offering and will be available to stream everywhere on 6/19/26 from Solid Brass Records.
