StarBath is an alternative rock band from New Bedford, Massachusetts who just released a new E.P. titled “Going In Raw”.
I caught up with the band to talk about their early musical experiences, how they got together and the making of the new record.
CMM-First off who all’s in the band and what does each member do?
StarBath-Our band consists of four members:
Gabe, our lead guitarist who is, rather unfortunately, obsessed with Magic the Gathering.
Adam, our bassist who has a personality
Dalton, he plays a single drum and a can of kidney beans.
Autumn, our vocalist who just plays any instrument that they can but only just well enough.
CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you all as kids and what artists or bands did you all enjoy the most?
StarBath-Gabe was born with a love for Black Sabbath, Adam was heavy into the Blue’s Clues television series, Dalton grew up listening to the Who and Autumn watched the Beatles Yellow Submarine on VHS until they put a sandwich in the VCR.
CMM-How did the band get together and develop your own sound?
StarBath-We’ve all been friends for over a decade, now and have collaborated in creative endeavors throughout that time, but the band was started by Dalton and Gabe during Covid out of a need to do something while everything was shut down. They then recruited the band’s first bassist, a very cool guy named Kerrick. Autumn was then forced to join the band because they needed a gremlin to complete their image, rather, they wanted a singer. Kerrick eventually left the band to pursue other music projects and thus Adam joined and was molded into the bassist he was always meant to be. In this iteration of StarBath we are ever evolving our sound, always experimenting and always looking forward to the next thing.
CMM-The group recently released an album called “Going In Raw”. What was the writing and recording process like and were there any particular pieces of gear you used to get the sound you all were looking for?
StarBath-At our core, we are something of a jam band, so the writing process is mostly instinctual. Going in Raw is a compilation of jams that have been somewhat structured, as opposed to some of our earlier jam album releases that are more loose and free. We record and practice in a cold, sometimes smelly, old barn and that probably adds character to our mixes and tone, somehow.
CMM-If the band could compose a score for any film director, who would it be and what would the film be about?
StarBath-Gabe would compose for Dario Argento and the film would probably be psychedelic and horrifying to some degree, there’d probably be a stoned wizard in there somewhere too. Adam would compose for Adam Sandler’s next big flick starring Adam Sandler as Adam Sandler and Adam guest starring as Adam Sandler’s son Adam Sandler Jr., Dalton would compose for the next big Simpsons movie which would be about how hard it is to stay on the air so long and Autumn’s entire personality is an Adult Swim bumper so making music for one of those would be pretty sick.
CMM-Anything coming up?
StarBath-As of right now we are indulging in unhinged jam and recording sessions and plan to make and release as much music as possible.
