Jaguar Glass are an Alternative / Psych rock band from Atlanta, GA. made up of bassist Josiah Soren, guitarist Tomas Uribe, vocalist/keyboardist Sophia Trautman and drummer Ben McEntire.
I caught up with Tomas recently who spoke on behalf of the band to talk about their musical background, how they got together and the making of their new E.P. “The Float”.
CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you all as kids and what artists or bands did you enjoy the most?
Tomas-I think a band that most of us were definitely influenced by as kids would be The Beatles. As cliché as it sounds, there’s just inherent genius in not just their songwriting but also their willingness to experiment in the studio – whether it’s through their production, engineering or sonic palette, they paved the way to so many creative possibilities as artists. We can talk on and on about any one of their works and why those ideas were profound for whatever reason but it’s undeniable, they were incredible.
CMM-How did Jaguar Glass form and start developing its sound?
Tomas-Each of us individually were working on creative projects and ideas with tons of people in Atlanta and Athens, GA. Tomás and Sophie were hired by Josiah to work on a record of his and during that time we exchanged our own separate ideas and that started a creative studio project that eventually led to our first few songs. Once Ben joined the project, we finally got to play together in a room as a band and the music all of a sudden had a clearer identity.
CMM-You all recently released an amazing E.P. called “The Float”. What was the writing and recording process for those tracks like? Any particular gear or instruments you used during the recording sessions that helped inspire you?
Tomas-When we first started working on music together, we were all super busy working on other music so we had recorded our first songs, Tomorrow (For Sure) and Zombie Ants back in Summer 2024 along with a bunch of other demos. We took a solid break for a while to work on other projects and do some soul searching of our own music – eventually we took a risk and booked a show before we had enough songs ready to go. That forced us to kick it into high gear and we wrote a bunch of songs and booked some time at the studio to workshop demos for Anchor, Red Tape, Marionette and Ghosts (A Dream). During the demo sessions, we knocked out Anchor so fast, the demo became the final release minus some additional production we added later on. We played our first show and recorded that set, used the tracks from that set to make templates to record over for the final releases and that’s what made Red Tape, Marionette and Ghosts (A Dream) work out. We wanted to preserve the feeling of us live in the recording.
CMM-If the band could score any film director’s movie who would it be and what would the film be about?
Tomas-Alejandro González Iñárritu and it would be a perspective bending movie about a character who becomes incapable of touching the ground like some sort of force field won’t allow him to become grounded anymore but the rest of the characters around them don’t recognize that phenomenon.
CMM-What do you all have coming up next?
Tomas-We’ve got some good video of us performing live that we’re stoked to release soon, a few shows in the summer including Bragg Jam Music Fest in Georgia and many shows in the fall that all have yet to be announced. Without a doubt we’ll be releasing new music as well in the very near future but we’re just happy to be focused on our current release for a while!!
