Alex Lara Ibarra started the post punk/experimental/chill wave project Group Photos back in 2016. Their new E.P. titled “216” is a fine collection of mind twisting songs that capture Ibarra’s knack for crafting incredibly catchy music that’s smothered in layers of colorful sonic textures and flourishing effects.
Tracks like “Wavelength” harness traces of industrial noise and washes of dream like experimentation with a distant yet ever so present vocal delivery. It’s as menacing as it is beautiful and makes me think what it be like if Kevin Shields collaborated with EINSTÜRZENDE NEUBAUTEN.
“Two Way Channel” is more dance driven with it’s pumping bass line and pulsating beat while “After-Image” has all the makings of an instant post punk classic.
Overall this is a fantastic E.P. and Group Photos have quickly become one of my new favorite artists. Check out the full E.P. here.
