Chicago based noise rockers Virgin Mother deliver four cuts of menacing destruction on their latest E.P. “Woe”.
Things get going right out of the gate with the frantic sounds of “Accident Prone”. It’s pounding drums and blistering guitars set the foundation as the shrill, frantic vocals blast through the speakers with reckless abandon.
The band then immediately rip right into the ragging sounds of “Proof Of Life”. The music blends elements of classic bands like The Jesus Lizard, Today’s The Day and The Dazzling Killmen with vocals leaning more towards bands like The Locust or An Albatross. It’s a relentless track from beginning to end that harnesses more energy then most other bands times ten.
Things continue with the equally as intense “Altar Call”. It starts out with all of the chaos and rage of the first two tracks but eventually drops down into more experimental territory as an ocean of lulling ambient tones radiate in fine form.
Everything shifts even further during the E.P.’s final track “Benevolent Grey”. It’s as intense and emotional as the other three but showcases a more gothic/dark wave vibe that eventually breaks into a thunderous riff of epic proportions. The chilling atmospheric guitar notes that ring out during the tracks final moments come off like the closing of the curtain during the end of a dramatic play.
Overall “Woe” is an incredible listening experience that takes you on a ride for the ages. Highly recommended.
