Founded by multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Sam Bernhardt, Oblique Angels have been quite proficient this year releasing two new singles and this new E.P. titled “A Still Life”.
Kicking things off with the laid back feeling “What Could Be” I was instantly drawn in by the songs intricate guitar work, thumping bass line and shuffling beat. It’s got a a lot of appeal to it and makes me think of a modern day Harry Nilsson .
“Escaped” is a quick and passionate guitar based number full of rich ambient reverbs and smooth calming vocals. The song is structured in a way where you can really hear the room. It’s got this other worldly presence to it all that’s really second to none.
These vibes continue on the title track “A Still Life” as a flourishing organ beams radiant chords alongside a roaming piano part and sea of synths. There’s certainly a Beatles side to it all but it also takes me back to moments of the Lou Reed & John Cale track “In A Dream” from their “Songs For Drella” album released back in 1990. This nearly seven and a half minute epic really showcases just how amazing Bernhardt is as a composer, arranger and songwriter.
Bottom line this is one of my favorite releases of 2022. Highly recommended.
