Liminal Feels follow up their brilliant 2023 debut E.P. with a brand new five track release titled “Bowl Of Spirits”. The project is the brainchild of Seattle area musician Guy Palmer Merrill who wrote, performed and engineered the record along with some contributions from Scot Michael of Titan Recording Studio fame.
Things get going with the speedy title track that has a quirky punk feel to it and reminds me at times of Devo, The Pixies and Dinosaur Jr but only if all three of those bands got together to jam, created a side project and recorded a one off single.
The pulsating drum machine beat that carries “Psychic Reversals” sounds great alongside the simple guitar riff, gliding bass line and synths that accompany it all. It’s a catchy and uplifting track, that’s sure to have you singing along with it quickly.
Meanwhile the intricate acoustic guitar focused “A River” really ups the levels of psychedelia as it’s hypnotic flow and deep reverb drenched tones show off the type of diversity Merrill is capable of. It’s totally different from the records other tracks but it feels perfect and makes total sense.
Things shift back to the more driving side of Merrill’s style on “Surface Glow” which reminds me a bit of Gang Of Four as there’s a relentless dance punk groove to it all while closing number “Slip Away” is a certified banger full of distorted riffs and colorful effects.
I really can’t get enough of “Bowl Of Spirits”. Simply put it’s a fun record to listen to and I’m excited to hear all future releases.
