Based in Nottingham, UK Mesha Dyer is one of the most prolific and inspiring new artists going today. With twenty eight releases on bandcamp including the new album “Mesha Rules Baby” and an E.P. titled “Past” there are no plans of slowing down anytime soon.
I caught up with Mesha to talk about early musical influences, songwriting and the making of the new album.
CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you as a kid and what artist or band did you enjoy the most?
Mesha-As a child I really enjoyed listening to One Direction they were my favourite band. I was obsessed.
CMM-When did you first start playing music and creating your own songs?
Mesha-At first, I played the trumpet around aged 9 and then I played clarinet aged 10 (which I really want to get into playing again) I also played the piano at age 11.
I started making music in 2017 when I was 16 years old and I started playing guitar around the same time. After I left school, I was really sad and didn’t really have any friends so music was a way for me to express how I was feeling. I play bass too started playing in 2020 at age 19.
CMM-You released an album on Valentine’s Day called “Mesha Rules Baby”. What was the writing and recording process like? Any particular gear or instruments you used during the recording sessions that helped inspire you?
Mesha-The process of making this album was slightly different from the previous ways I make music because I learned how to connect my amp to my audio interface so it was pretty cool to do that, I recorded some of the songs without a microphone and this is the first time I’ve done more than one guitar solo on an album and also my first time doing a keyboard solo on the last song. I’ve also never fully made indie rock/indie pop music so that was enjoyable and I loved how the album turned out I’m very proud of it.
I think playing my mustang and strat helped with my inspiration because I just love playing guitar and love using distortion and feeling like a rock star.
CMM-If you could create a score for any film director who would it be and what would the film be about?
Mesha-I’m not sure what film director I would choose but I would want the movie to have something to do with music maybe about a singer/rapper who is discovering themselves and who is confident in exploring different genres/styles
CMM-What do you have coming up next? Any new recordings or shows?
Mesha– I am working on new songs right now. They might go on an EP or an album not sure yet but be on the lookout for something .I may drop a few songs on bandcamp/soundcloud.
