Chicago post-hardcore/noise-rock band Latter have shared the video for new single “Expiration Date,” taken from their new EP, What Lives Inside of Me, out July 25th. The video  draws inspiration from “The Substance”, fixating on singer/guitarist Meredith Haines’ face and mirror self, and excoriating the hyper-fixation on women’s bodies as an outsized source of value, especially as a public-facing artist.

On the track, singer/guitarist Meredith Haines says:
“As someone who was kind of raised in a society to prize and value beauty, youthfullness, thinness, etc, “Expiration Date” is about the anxiety of losing that power in a society that doesn’t value women once they turn 40. It’s about how I feel like I only have 4-5 years left to do what I want with the “assets” I have while my male counterparts have all the time in the world. But it’s more universal than that, everyone always feels like they’re running out of time.”

Along with the video, the band have announced a series of tour dates this summer, including a set at Ghost Canyon Fest in Colorado in August and a tour with fellow Chicago noise rock band NÜDE across the Midwest and East Coast.

Formed by chance in 2022 in Chicago, Latter is the noise rock project of Philadelphia-born sound artist Meredith Haines and drummer Jonathan Alvarado (Beach Bunny). After a decade in the Philadelphia DIY scene, Haines had walked away from music entirely—burned out and disillusioned, she had given up for good. At 32, she was building a new life as a sound artist and college advisor. In July of that year, Haines and Alvarado met through mutual friends and began weekly jam sessions. What started as casual meetups quickly unearthed something deeper—a sound that felt urgent, raw, and necessary. Against all odds, Latter became Haines’ return to music.

The band’s debut album, My Body Is My Sickness, written during the final stages of a destructive relationship, documents a mind unraveling. Themes of chronic illness, post-COVID dissociation, and heartbreak course through the songs. Self-funded and recorded with Pete Grossmann at Bricktop Recording, the 7-track album fuses noise, post-hardcore, screamo, and indie pop into a form that resists containment. In early 2025, a live video of their single “I Don’t Owe You” went viral, garnering national attention.

What Lives Inside of Me expands on the ferocity of their debut, exploring more the more nuanced, complex emotions that come from picking up the pieces of one’s life after a trauma, as well as navigating womanhood in the entertainment industry. The duo, further fleshed out live by bassist Clementine Baker and guitarist Nic Cheatle (Beach Bunny), add more layers of dissonance and contemplative textures to their sonic world, ever-spearheaded by Haines’ relentless, blistering voice. “Most of these songs are really about how it feels to see your face change in the mirror,” explains Haines. “Like the person who is looking back at you isn’t you anymore, and the anxiety and fear around losing the biggest source of capital you have – your appearance – in a system that values that over everything else.”
