Columbus, Ohio based Luno Moon blend aspects of shoegaze, indie rock and psychedelia to make some of the coolest songs I’ve heard all year on their latest release “Blue Dreams”

I caught up with them to talk about their early musical experiences, how they started writing songs and the making of the new record.

CMM-What was the first music that really made an impact on you as a kid and what artist or band did you enjoy the most?

L.M.-The first music I remember hearing and falling in love with was hip-hop. I was a huge fan of Nelly as a kid. So much so, I would dress up like him and would constantly perform his songs.

CMM-How did you start writing songs and developing your own sound?

L.M.-I started out writing songs in a journal when I was a kid and eventually bought a tape recorder from Goodwill that I recorded them on. I eventually got an iPod and used GarageBand and other apps to experiment with different sounds. Since 2016, I have recorded music from my home studio, completely DIY. I’ve always aimed to have nostalgic, lo-fi and psychedelic elements to all of the music I make. Tame Impala, Kid Cudi, and Nirvana have probably influenced my sound the most.

CMM-You recently released a record called “Blue Dreams”. What was the writing and recording process like and were there any particular pieces of gear you used to get the sound you were looking for?

L.M.-Writing “Blue Dreams” came pretty easily with all of the confusion and uncertainty life gave me at the time. Not being sure where my life is going or if anything is supposed to work out became a big theme in the project. I was on a huge Dinosaur Jr. kick the past year and actually used a J Mascis edition Big Muff pedal for recording the guitars to get as thunderous wall of fuzz. I wanted this album to sound beautiful and chaotic. C’est la vie.

CMM-If you could do a score for any film director, who would it be and what would the film be about?

L.M.-I would have to go with Oliver Stone. His visual style and the way he used music in his films is the best. I love thrillers so it would have to be about hunting a serial killer or something haha

CMM-Anything coming up?

L.M.-Yes! My fiancée and I perform and release music under the name “BeachKitty”. I’ve been putting almost of my time into recording our second EP. We have a few shows coming up next month that were really excited for. We’re playing our favorite spot, Half Baked, in Columbus, OH 11/7 and then traveling up to Youngstown for a house show on 11/8. Then we will be back at Half Baked again on the 19th!
